Coach named best in state, region
For the second time, the Utah High School Activities Association has named West Jordan boys basketball coach the National Federation of State High School Coach of the Year. This year, Briggs was also named the Sectional High School Coach of the Year.
“We’re very proud of Coach Briggs and what he does for the sport,” UHSAA Assistant Director Kevin Dustin said. “He is professional with everyone while being a great coach. He exemplifies everything that is good about athletics.”
“I feel very humbled to have received this recognition,” Briggs said. “I don’t know exactly what I’ve done to deserve this but it is a really nice honor.”
Just as the season began, Briggs was informed of the state award by the UHSAA. The section award announcement was more recent when he received a letter towards the end of the season.
Briggs was a former basketball player for West Jordan High who graduated in 1989. While he was attending college in the early 1990s, he was invited back to the basketball program to help coach. “I enjoyed working with the teams so much that I changed my major and went into education,” Briggs said.
Briggs coached the boy’s junior varsity squads for five years before taking the head varsity coaching position in 1999.
