West Jordan football prepare to finish out the season
It looks as if both West Jordan and Copper Hills’ football seasons will end on Oct. 19, the last day of the regular season. The two teams are currently sitting in 5th and 6th place in Region 3, with only two games left to play in 2011.
While both teams have the same amount of wins with three, Copper Hills has clearly had the more enjoyable season. In 2010, the Grizzlies didn’t win a game, so a 3-4 record through the first week of October is a vast improvement over last year. West Jordan came into 2011 a heavy favorite to make waves in the state, let alone Region 3, but have lost some close games, putting their loss total one higher than their wins.
Copper Hills beat Taylorsville, another team with no wins in 2010, on opening day 27-18. The following week, Sept. 26, they lost to Kearns 31-0, but bounced back on Oct. 2 to trounce Hillcrest 50-21. They lost to Herriman on Sept. 9, 40-21, beat American Fork the following week 21-14 and rounded out September with a pair of losses to West Jordan, 49-19, and Jordan 41-10. The Grizzlies lost to Region 3 heavyweight, Alta on Oct. 7, 51-0.
West Jordan lost to its old Region 3 rival, Bingham, 45-28, to start the season on Aug. 19. The following week the Jags lost to Hurricane 48-36, but came back on Sept.2 to blank Hunter 26-0. They beat Pleasant Grove on Sept. 9, 27-14. A couple of close losses late in the season hurt the Jaguars, though. They were beaten by Cottonwood on Sept. 30 by a field goal, 41-38, and lost to Brighton on Oct. 7, 14-9.
Despite their records, both teams have some great players who contribute on a weekly basis. West Jordan’s quarterback, Michael Moorehead, has thrown for 1,667 yards through early October, connecting for 14 touchdowns while only throwing 5 interceptions. Cameron Peacock has rushed for over 600 yards and hit pay dirt, scoring eight touchdowns. DeShawn Perkins has continued his stellar play, going both ways, leading the team in interceptions with four and piling on 32 tackles. Perkins also has 35 receptions for over 400 yards and two touchdowns.
Copper Hills has been led by Tommy Ligman, who plays offense and defense. He has amassed 560 rushing yards and 35 tackles on defense. Zach Smith leads the team with nearly 300 yards receiving and Anthony Hall has four sacks under his belt for 2011.
The season should wrap up on Oct. 19 for both teams. West Jordan will face Region 3 co-leader Jordan, 7-1, and Copper Hills will finish against Brighton, who also has only three wins. Both records are of our press deadline.
