At the end of each season, high school coaches are able to nominate one senior athlete from their team who contributes competitively at a high level while maintaining a grade point average of 3.75 or higher. Several of these athletes are named to the Academic All-State Team.

Copper Hills High School is the home of three such individuals following the 2011 fall sports season. Cross country runner Mitchell Crane, tennis player Kate-Elizabeth Romney and volleyball player Malory Curtis all were named to the team after superb senior seasons and high achievements in the classroom.

Crane, who has run cross country all three years at Copper Hills, upheld a 4.0 grade point average and placed in the top 20 in Region 3 cross country competition, all while representing the Grizzlies’ senior class as a class officer.

“He’s a great kid. He gives everything he’s got day in and day out,” Copper Hills cross country coach Garth Rushforth said. “He has a lot of dedication to his team, himself and his school.”

Middle blocker for Copper Hills High’s volleyball team, Malory Curtis was just as busy this fall with a grade point average of 3.9 and a recent Sterling Scholar Award. Curtis has also competed all three years she has attended Copper Hills. She is known as a leader on and off the volleyball court.

“Malory nurtures and motivates her teammates,” Lani Maile, Copper Hills volleyball coach, said. “She is open-minded to whatever the team needs.”

According to Rushforth, Copper Hills High School aims to maintain high grades throughout sport seasons. “Our team average is a 3.5 grade point average. I believe that is one of, if not the highest, in the school,” Rushforth said.

“Malory is a go-getter, and will go far in whatever she does.” Maile said.
