McDougal Mortuary
When a loved one passes away, family members need a mortuary they can trust to handle the funeral and other arrangements with dignity and professionalism. McDougal Mortuary has been doing just this for more than half a century.
In 1950, R. David McDougal fulfilled a childhood dream by opening a mortuary. Located at 4330 South Redwood Road, David raised his family in a home that was attached to the funeral home. A 1985 remodel converted the entire building into a mortuary. David and his brother Richard, who was a partner and co-owner, built up the successful, respected business. Today, their sons and other descendants continue the 61-year tradition at the same Taylorsville location.
“We want to help families out. We want to serve to the best of our ability,” says Ron McDougal, family service manager and great-nephew of David. “The family is first.”
Ron says working with a family-owned company appeals to McDougal clients. He also says people choose McDougal to handle the affairs of a family member’s passing because of the sincere compassion and respect mortuary personnel exhibit.
“We have to remember to have a lot of respect for the individual and family,” he says. “They just lost someone close and may be struggling. It’s a business for us, but not for them. We have to help get them through things and take them by the hand.”
McDougal can even step in to help before the family member passes away. McDougal offers pre-planning, where representatives gather all necessary information about an individual or individuals; they discuss costs and put together all information in a folder to on hand so that when the person passes away, they can immediately act and begin handling the funeral arrangements. When the family member passes, McDougal representatives will help write the obituary and take care of the death certificate, as well as help select a casket and cemetery if the family hasn’t already done so. McDougal will then handle the viewing and the funeral service.
“Funerals are done whenever the family wants,” Ron says. “We’re flexible for where the service is. We work with funeral homes throughout the country.”
McDougal staff members will even travel out of state to conduct funerals. Private family viewings can also be held for the deceased loved one.
But McDougal does much more than handle the viewing and funeral arrangements. McDougal representatives will follow up with the family after the funeral for their After Care service. Here, McDougal will assist the family with the deceased family member’s social security and life insurance issues. McDougal personnel will even fill out forms and make phone calls. The After Care is part of the entire service and is no extra cost.
“We provide guidance for the family of the individual that has passed away,” Ron says. “We want to direct them where to go.”
Unlike many other funeral homes, at McDougal, the same funeral director will assist the family from the time the body is picked up through the funeral.
“It takes a special person to do this,” Ron says.
The McDougal Mortuary office is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., though clients can call 801-968-3800 and reach someone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
