Bangerter ‘ThrU Turn’ coming at 7800 South

120 days ago780 views

As early as the end of January, the Utah Department of Transportation will be implementing a temporary “ThrU Turn” on Bangerter Highway at 7800 South, while a new interchange is being built at that location.

The ThrU Turn design redirects left turns away from the intersection. Motorists traveling northbound or southbound on Bangerter who want to turn left at the 7800 South intersection will travel through the main intersection, make a U-turn at a signal controlled location, and come back to the intersection from the opposite direction and turn right. Movements for eastbound and westbound 7800 South traffic will remain the same.

“Using the ThrU Turn will allow the new bridge over 7800 South to be built all at once rather than in two or three phases, thus accelerating the completion of the project,” according to a press release issued by UDOT.  “It will also provide greater safety for commuters and construction crews in the area by moving the left turns away from the intersection and reducing congestion.

The change is temporary, but similar to the state’s first permanent ThrU Turn that opened at 12300 South and State Street in Draper last fall. Once the new interchange at 7800 South and Bangerter is completed later this year, the ThrU Turn will no longer be used.

UDOT has produced an animation designed to familiarize motorists with the ThrU Turn and how to navigate the intersection. The video can be viewed at the project website, www.udot.utah.gov/bangertersouth.
