Copper Hills ready to face challenging schedule as new season begins
Nov 30, 2023 01:02PM ● By Josh McFaddenA year after placing second in Region 3, the Copper Hills boys basketball team will need to be at its best this season.
The Grizzlies play in a tough league and only bring back one returning starter from last season. They are also now in Region 2, which comprises most of the same teams as a year ago. However, state power Corner Canyon is now a region opponent for Copper Hills, and struggling West Jordan has gone to Class 5A.
Last season, the Grizzles had some struggles in non-region play but went 7-3 in region action, finishing a game behind Riverton for the league title. After blasting West Jordan 67-24 in the first round of the 6A playoffs, Copper Hills fell to Fremont in round two. That group of players is largely gone, with plenty of new faces hoping to make an impact on the team.
Isaiah Reiser, a sophomore guard, came off the bench last season as a freshman and averaged 9.7 points per game. He also dished out 2.6 assists and made 28 three-pointers. The sky’s the limit for the young player, and his role should be even larger this year. Another contributor back from last year’s squad is junior guard Boston Lambourne. He hit 10 three pointers and had 21 rebounds in 2022–23.
A lot of production is gone from last season.
The Grizzlies must find a way to replace heir second-leading scorer from a year ago, Kyson Hymas. Other departed seniors left a void that Copper Hills’ players will have to fill.
Copper Hills opened at Davis on Nov. 20, a good test against a solid team from Region 1. Copper Hills will participate in the Skyridge Tournament Dec. 8 and 9 as well as the KSA Tournament Dec. 14–16. The first region game is Jan. 12 at home against Bingham. λ
