Like many of Shakespeare’s plays, “Romeo and Juliet” ends in a blood bath. But what if Juliet decided not to stab herself? What if she chose to start over and maybe find a story with a happy ending?
That’s the premise of the hit Broadway musical “& Juliet,” presented by Zions Bank Broadway at the Eccles, running through June 22 in Salt Lake at Eccles Theater.
After Romeo’s demise, Juliet (played by the delightful and talented Rachel Simone Webb) runs off with her friends May (Nick Drake), Angelique (played by understudy Naima Alakham) and Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway (played by understudy Shelby Griswold). The quartet travels to Paris, where Juliet finds herself in a similar predicament as before, entangling herself with Francois Du Bois (Mateus Leite Cardoso), a shy boy from a wealthy family.
Several stories are told during the musical, including the adventures of Juliet and her friends, and the relationship between Shakespeare and Anne. Anne wants Juliet to have a shot at becoming anything she wants to be, while Shakespeare (played hilariously by Corey Mach) wants her to be married, in what he considers a happy ending. The couple disagrees, as Anne encourages Juliet to find her own voice, allowing Anne to do the same.
The high-energy music is a pop mash-up, similar to “Moulin Rouge,” featuring hits by Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, NSYNC, Jessie J, Ke$ha, and more, all written by the Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Max Martin.
Juliet shines in her performances of “Since U Been Gone,” “Larger Than Life,” “Baby One More Time,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” and “Roar.” A reunion of the De Bois Band, singing “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back), was a crowd favorite, as was Anne’s heart-rending rendition of “That’s the Way It Is.”
The ensemble showcased their incredible dance skills, featuring choreography by Emmy Award-winning Jennifer Weber. The show’s book is written by Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” David West Read and directed by Luke Sheppard.
“& Juliet” will be performed at Eccles Theater (131 S. Main St,) in Salt Lake through June 22. Tickets are available at saltlakecity.broadway.com.
