The international singing festival, La Voz Latina de Utah, made its debut in West Jordan with participation of singers from Venezuela and Chile. Each contestant had to demonstrate proficiency in three genres: tropical, folkloric and pop ballad.

Hugo Nava from Cabimas, Venezuela, was named the winner due to his powerful voice and captivating performance. The three-night festival was held Nov. 16, 24 and 30 at A lo Maracucho restaurant (7760 S. 3200 West).

Carlos Villarroel created the event to highlight Latin culture in the state. Chief judge for the festival was international singing artist Mario Hernández. He was joined by Saúl Cuauro, an acclaimed percussionist in the state, and Latin drummer Domingo Rodríguez.

Along with Nava, participants in the festival included Venezuelan singers Aranza Moncada, David Sánchez and Emily Riobueno de la Guaira and Raúl Villanueva from Chile. The three concerts were sold out and organizers are excited for future competitions. Visit lavozlatinadeutah.wordpress.com for more information. λ
